US corn and soybean plantings will swallow up less than half of the land freed up by the collapse in winter wheat sowings and by the lapse of conservation programmes, Informa Economics has said.
The private analysis group has raised by 1m tonnes to 77.92m acres its forecast for soybean sowings, meaning it believes plantings are, after all, on course for a fresh record this year.
And it edged its forecast for corn sowings 170,000 acres higher to 89.65m acres, taking them 3.15m acres higher year on year.
In total, the increases account for some 3.6m acres of the ground freed up by the fall in winter wheat plantings to their lowest since 1913.
Cotton switch
However, that leaves 2.6m acres to be accounted for by other crops, or left fallow, before accounting for the 2m acres or so expected to be returned to agriculture after being deployed for conservation use.
American Farm Bureau economists earlier this month estimated that cotton plantings would rise by about 1m acres, encouraged by a jump of more than 50% in plantings last year.
Other analysts have forecast some rise in spring wheat sowings.
