Romania’s Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority started actions for the prevention of swine flu, even though no cases or suspicions of the illness have been reported, regulator president Marian Zlotea told MEDIAFAX Sunday.
Zlotea said border authorities were notified to check all products coming from other countries, especially the Americas following concern expressed by the World Health Organization.
So far, Romania has no suspicion of contamination with the potentially deadly swine flu virus, Zlotea said.
"We’ll also start an information campaign among swine breeders Monday so they take bio-security measures and get the necessary vaccines. The prevention campaign needs to be done as soon as possible to avoid cases of contamination in Romania," he said.
Mexico reported 81 deaths likely due to the swine flu virus since April 13 and in 20 cases the virus contamination was confirmed. Also, 1,324 people are under medical observation, according to the Mexican health minister cited by AFP.
U.S. authorities confirmed two cases of swine flu in the state of Kansas Saturday. Other cases were reported in Texas and California and students at a New York City high school may be suffering from the illness.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a “public health emergency of international concern" and called for immediate prevention measures.
