Romanian farmers who want to sell food products such as milk and eggs in markets need to be registered with the sanitary veterinary authority and observe hygiene and labeling conditions as of Feb 1, and will be checked in the upcoming period.
"Check-ups will start in the upcoming period, first to assess how many have registered, what irregularities and difficulties there are, what is still unclear, and then we’ll see what decisions to make, because these are provisions that affect very many people," said officials of the national Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority.
As of January 1, small producers may sell their food stuffs of animal origin directly in markets, fairs and exhibitions only if they are registered with the sanitary veterinary authority, according to an order of the food safety regulator.
The order was supposed to become effective on January 1, bur the food safety regulator postponed its enforcement by one month, to unfold an information campaign among farmers and give them more time to comply.
